Whereabouts Project

CSE Building Installation

Our primary location-sensing installation is in the new Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) building on north campus. We have the entire building instrumented for 802.11 locationing, so we can find the location of a PDA, laptop, or tag running the location client. The accuracy is about 4 meters, and we can place users in the correct room 80% of the time.

Location information is brokered by our location middleware, which efficiently processes the queries while enforcing privacy rules.

The location calculations are done by Ekahau, a commercial real-time location system.

If you are interested in using the CSE building location system for your research, for a project, or just to play around with, take a look at the Whereabouts Getting Started Guide, and if you have any questions please contact Scott Gifford.
